1. We will watch the Chamber Readers (a professional Reader's Theater group) perfrom Forty Fortunes.

 

2. Table groups will take notes and present 5 things that they though the Chamber Readers did well.

 

3. World Map Activity - We will locate the origins of both The Magic Brocade and The Gifts of Wali Dad.

 

4. We will read this week's play, The Gifts of Wali Dad: A tale of India and Pakistan.

Welcome back students. Third quarter is going to revolve around short stories and readers' theater. Unlike first semester, you are going to have language arts four times a week.

3. We will review the following vocabulary terms from the story: brocade, embroider, shimmer, loom, graze, discontent, immortal, marvel and bloodshot.

 

4. Students will read and rehearse The Magic Brocade in groups.

 

5. Homework - Define the nine vocabulary terms (above) in your own words.

Week Eighteen 12/5 - 12/8

 

Day One

 

Students will rotate between two stations:

 

1. Station One - We will read a recent article from Mauitime about the future of literacy on our island. Students will answer the following discussion questions (complete sentence answers):

 

A. Where are the 3 remaining book stores on Maui?

B. "As a child grows, reading requires _______ of the brain to operate...it actually makes thinking _______."

C. What is meant by the quote, "reading...frees the brain to have thoughts deeper than those that came before." ?

D. What is the main difference between a literate and an oral society?

E. "Writing forces people to _______ & __________."

F. Why did IKEA change the design of their BILLY bookcase?

G. Give 2 reasons why Borders failed as a company.

H. Kihei publisher Arnie Kotler believes that there will always be a place for physical books. Do you agree? Explain why or why not?

I. What percentage of American read a book in 2002? In 1992? In 1982? What do these numbers tell you?

J. According to professor Mitchell Stevens, why did Americans stop reading?

K. Give 2 reasons why Hawaii librarians would disagree with professor Stevens.

L. If you were to design our school's library, what would it look like. Write three details or draw a simple floorplan.

 

2. Station Two - Students will animate their 5 Paragraph Essay outlines using Myth Creator 2:

3. Homework - All slideshows are due by 6pm on Wednesday. Unfinished discussion questions (above) are due on day two . No latework will be graded as gradebooks close for the semester.

 

Day Two

 

1. We will play Creation Myth Jeopardy in preparation for your final exam. Concepts that you will need to know for the

Babylonian, Egyptian, Norse, Maori, Chinese, Mayan, Inca, Inuit, Yoruba and Hawaiian creation story include:

 

. How did the universe begin (e.g. chaos, emptiness, water, etc.)?

. Who were the first gods/titans?

. Was there a family/pantheon of gods or did they act alone?

. How was the earth formed?

. How were the sun, moon and stars created?

. How did man come to be?

. Why did the god(s) create man? Was it intended or an accident?

. How was man created?

. Is this a violent or peaceful creation story?

. What does this story tell us about male/female roles within the culture?

. What other natural phenomena does this particluar myth explain (e.g. rivers, hurricanes, mortality, etc.)

. How is man limited by the gods?

 

2. Homework - All slideshows are due by 6pm on Wednesday. No latework will be graded as gradebooks close for the semester.

 

 

Day Three

 

1. Final Exam (30 POINTS!) -  Your test will include the following types of questions: multiple choice, short written response, fill-in-the-blank, and matching.

 

2. Homework - None, gradebooks are closed.
